16 - 19 Bursary Fund

The 16 to 19 Bursary Fund provides financial support to students aged 16 -19 years old on 31 August, before the academic year begins. The bursary is to help students overcome the specific financial barriers to participation they face so that  they can remain in education e.g. to help students with the cost of travel, to buy essential books, equipment or specialist clothing e.g. protective overalls. Bursary funds cannot be used for living costs, learning support e.g. counselling or mentoring, or to support extra-curricular activities where these are not essential to the student’s study programme. Students will receive the amount they actually need to participate, so it is possible that no award or a limited award may be made. There are two types of 16 to 19 bursary:

Bursaries for defined vulnerable groups of up to £1,200 a year

Students in the following defined vulnerable groups are able to apply for the vulnerable student bursary:

  • In care
  • Care leavers including students with Special Guardianship Orders
  • Receiving income Support (IS), or Universal Credit (UC) because they are financially supporting themselves or financially supporting themselves and someone who is dependent on them and living with them such as a child or partner
  • Receiving Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Personal Independence Payments (PIP) in their own right as well as Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or UC in their own right

Discretionary Bursaries

Schools and Colleges receive a small allocation of funding to be used for discretionary bursaries, for which they set their own eligibility assessment criteria.  Foreland Fields School has agreed that the following students may apply for the discretionary bursary:

  • from a household with an annual income below £25,000
  • students entitled to free school meals
  • students with exceptional circumstances e.g. where financial barriers may affect their transition into Sixth Form or may cause a college placement to fail.

Bursaries will be paid ‘in kind’ such as a transport pass to promote independent travelling or for books or equipment which are required for specific lessons i.e. catering equipment.  Any equipment provided through this bursary remains the property of Foreland Fields School and must be returned at the end of the course/academic year to be re-used by other eligible students.
