Communication Boards

Communication boards provide a single page of symbols usually linked to a topic or specific activity. The user can point with their finger or eyes to words, photos or symbols. They can be modeled by the interactor to support language development.

We use communication boards to support many aspects of the school day. Students are introduced to new words and supported to start to link things together to request and comment.

In school we use Communication Boards at 3 different levels. Often the student uses a Stage 2 level board but will be really interested with an adult modelling use of the vocabulary on a Stage 3 board.

Other people modelling the use of the Communication Boards is the key to success. It shows the students how to start to link symbols together and use different functions of language. On a story linked board this could be to say "big + scary + monster" or to request "more + flour" for a cooking activity.
